About the Author
Dr. Robert H. Friis earned his PhD from Columbia University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. A student of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in the field. His teaching and research experience in epidemiology spans more than three decades. Formerly, he was Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University School of Public Health, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Community Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Health Science at Brooklyn College. After this, he served as Director of the Public Health Department’s Field Epidemiology Unit in Orange County (California). In later years, he joined the faculty of the University of California, Irvine’s departments of medicine, neurology, and social ecology. As Professor and Chair of the Health Science Department at California State University, Long Beach, he has taught introductory epidemiology and biostatistics. A professional and scientific writer, he has published more than 50 articles on epidemiology. A member of the American Public Health Association and the Society for Epidemiologic Research. As a Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine, he specializes in environmental medicine and community health.
